Saying that the internet is divided may have been a tad dramatic, but since an accidental leak of the Jersey that popped up on eBay, Philly fans have been divided over the new style.
What is City Connect?
The City Connect jersey first started rolling out during the 2021 season, with seven teams receiving the jersey, and more are added each season. It’s a jersey that Nike is making that reflects the city’s spirit. The jerseys have ranged from the Washington Nationals having cherry blossoms on their jersey, while you have other designs that are a little bolder, like the San Diego Padre’s who traded their white, black, and yellow colors for mint green, hot pink, yellow and white.
The Phillies City Connect uniforms are bold, considering many were wondering where the blue and yellow colour scheme came from as it’s such a contrast to the red that’s associated so strongly with the team, along with the grey away game jersey’s, and the retro maroon and powder blue uniforms. They’re all consistent in the teams color scheme, but the city connect jersey takes the opposite approach.
The team and Nike offered up how this new color scheme came to be on Instagram.
From light to dark, Philly has always been a place unafraid to revolutionize, start anew, and work hard to make change.” Continuing, “Blue and yellow are based on our city’s flag, unchanged since its inception.”
While this answered many of the questions about the new color scheme, people were still a little unsure about the new uniform.
Reception
There’s always a lot of commotion when it comes to changing a staple, especially in sports. It was no surprise when Phillies fans had something to say when they first got a taste of the Phillies City Connect jersey with the leaked jersey on eBay.
A screenshot of the listing was quickly spread around social media, from Reddit to X (formerly Twitter). It received mixed reception.

On April 5th, when the jerseys were revealed, fans took to the comments to let their thoughts be heard about the new uniform. There was a mix of positive and negative reactions. Once it was officially posted on the Phillies Instagram account, a user on Instagram commented, “could be the worst jersey in Philly sports history…”
Another saying, “Mickey Mouse softball uniforms.”
Another comment took a more positive approach, saying, “These are actually fire. Anybody that disagrees please explain your opinion.”
While many are still critical of the new uniform, and mixed reactions have been expressed online, many fans have embraced the new look. You can already spot fans wearing the jersey at the away games before it officially debuts Friday night, April 12th, at home.
Time will only tell regarding fans’ feelings towards the new jerseys. I also have a feeling that the opinion of the new uniforms will depend on how well the Phillies play on Friday’s at home.
Final Thoughts
At first, we found the jersey confusing and were disappointed they were taking the red jersey out of the lineup for a blue and yellow one. However, it’s grown on us after seeing fans sport the jersey to games and seeing the Phanatic rocking their version of the jersey. It’s also an excellent option for fans who prefer not to wear white or grey jerseys and one with a darker tone. It pairs well a lot more with a lot of people’s everyday wear, making it more versatile.
It’ll be a great addition and will offer a different look than your usual game day look or if you just want to show your love for the team.
